		<description><![CDATA[[...] Herman Bavinck, the great Dutch Reformed theologian, in discussing this doctrine says, &#8220;Another important attribute that the Reformation ascribed to Scripture in opposition to Rome was perspicuity or clarity.  According to Rome, Scripture is unclear (Reformed Dogmatics, Prolegomena, Volume One, 475, italics my own).&#8221;  It is necessary to keep in mind the context in which this doctrine arose as we go on to define it more clearly, because it helps us to understand what the Reformers were attempting to achieve with it.  Bavinck goes on, &#8220;It (the doctrine of clarity) does not mean that the matters and subjects with which Scripture deals are not mysteries that far exeed the reach of the human intellect.  Nor does it assert that Scripture is clear in all its parts, so that no scientific exegesis is needed&#8230; (477).&#8221;  This is where the recent confusion has come into play in relation to the doctrine.  Some Protestant Christians would posit that Scripture is in all parts clear, that all matters of faith and practice alike are easily accessible to the reader of Scripture.
